Shop Searcy for Father's Day

We recently celebrated Father's Day, which means mothers, wives and children were on the lookout for the perfect gift for their father figure. Whether you’re shopping for a Father's Day or any other holiday or birthday gift, remember to keep your search local.

According to the Small Business Administration, there are a total of 28 million small businesses in the United States. This accounts for 54% of all United States sales and 55% all U.S. jobs. Be a Localist reported for every $100 spent at a local business, $64 stayed within the community, however if you spent that much money at a big box store, only $32 stays in the community. In 2014, independent businesses created nearly 2 million of the 3 million private-sector jobs generated, or 2 out of 3 employment opportunities. Small businesses make a large impact.

Marianne Jones, owner of The Boutique in downtown Searcy, said shopping locally benefits everyone in the community.

“When I spend money in Searcy, more of that money circulates in our community rather when we spend money at a big chain or out of town,” Jones said. “Small businesses owners know this and try to shop with each other before we go out of town. I want Searcy residents to realize the benefits of shopping locally because keeping our money in town benefits all of us.”

A small business owner and chamber member in Searcy said any kind of spending outside the community like traveling to Little Rock, Conway or shopping online hurts businesses in Searcy and community development.

“If my business closes, you’ll lose several full- and part-time salaries,” the chamber member business owner said. “I pay property tax and my assets of the store to the county. White County would lose that revenue. When we spend money outside the community, that becomes an enormous loss.”

When you shop in your city, your dollars stay in your city. By purchasing lunch from Burrito Day for your dad, your sales tax supports the new Searcy swimming pool which will open Labor Day weekend. By gifting your father with a new recliner from Sowell’s Furniture, your sales tax helps the relocation of Fire Station #2. When you buy a new kitchen gadget or home good from The Boutique, you are supporting the new lights and concession stand at the softball complex which is attracting state- and nation-wide tournaments which increases our city and county sales revenue.

There are a million reasons to shop locally. Even if you or your child is handmaking a gift, purchase your supplies like paper, markers, scissors, etc. locally. Your purchase inside Searcy and White County supports a local business, the local economy and local improvements of your community.
